Christmas Memories cont…!

15 Monday Dec 2014

Before I continue with the Christmas memories of the Board Members I would like to give a shout out and major props to Laura Halvorson for giving me her Christmas Memory post despite the fact that she has been in the hospital fighting pneumonia since the beginning of of the month. I was completely shocked when I opened up my email yesterday to receive her post. I am happy to report that she is doing well, and we wish you a speedy recovery! I know that all of our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

Laura Halvorson, Secretary and Program Director.  She is also Ms. Wheelchair Texas 2014 (just had to throw that in!)

Christmas is always a memorable time of year filled with traditions. My family comes in from all over, sometimes even as far as Norway. We feast on amazingly delicious home cooked food and baked goods. Christmas is not Christmas without traditional Norwegian Lefse… Mmmm mmmm good!
Laura's memory 1-Norwegian tortilla

Norwegian Lefse can be thought of like a tortilla made of potato flour and then we spread butter and sugar on it.

Although I have many favorite Christmas memories, one of the most memorable ones was in the year 2007. At every Halvorson family gathering we usually play some sort of game. Usually a card game my late grandmother created called Progressive Rummy. A lot of families seem to have some sort of variation of the card game Rummy. In 2007 we changed up our gaming a bit. That was right about when the Nintendo Wii released Guitar Hero III. As many of my friends and family know I was beyond obsessed with that game for many of years before muscular dystrophy took its toll on my ability to stand and use my arms so freely. That year I decided to bring my Wii and games with me to my aunts house to entertain my younger cousins and myself. To my surprise the whole family got into playing the game. The good thing about Guitar Hero is it has music that’s from multiple genres and decades for all to enjoy. The adults could jam out and play Rolling Stones while the youngins could jam out to The Strokes and everything in between.  It was great to see everyone enjoy themselves, some of us had to practice our patience in turn taking skills. LOL. It was a Christmas I will never forget. I am blessed to have such a fun loving big family and look forward to many more Christmas memories in our future.  Love, Laura
Thank you for sharing your memory with us Laura. No one can beat the look on your Uncle’s face, priceless! I Will put words in all of our readers mouths and say “it was totally enjoyable!”

Rolling on, Stephanie

What a way to throw a Christmas party!

11 Thursday Dec 2014

On Saturday night at the Comfort Suites in Frisco Texas Camp Craig Allen had their Christmas party full of joy, laughter, door prizes, an accessible photo booth, and what else but BBQ!! We did things in true Camp Craig Allen style! Here are some of my favorite pic’s from the evening:

What an absolutely joy it was to see Dawn Cruzan healthy, well, and back in her role as President of Camp Craig Allen after spending 8 day’s in a coma several months ago! She is the picture taker at most of our events, and she did not slack on that job either since being back! These pictures are cracking me up because Dawn was like a kid in a candy store on Christmas morning with this selfie stick camera thing. I am not exactly sure who’s selfie stick camera thing this was (I think it was Miles’s), but I think she needs one for Christmas (that is a plug for Dawn’s Christmas list)! In case you are lost you can see in some of the pictures that she is holding up a long stick. That has a camera on the end of it so that way she can always include herself in them while still taking the pictures! Great idea! Dawn’s personality just shines right through in each of these pictures! Words cannot express the love I have for her!!

Many kudos go out to the MeatMeisters BBQ team for giving us a taste of their awesome BBQ! I can now say that my Christmas is complete!! And they even provided us with their own homemade desserts!!

Dawn almost didn’t make it in this picture!

This nice gentleman not only came to the party, but he also brought with him a motorcycle to be raffled off with the door prizes!

Have I mentioned before that the MeatMeisters BBQ team fixed us a wonderful dinner with all the trimmings? Well they did and it was delicious!

Racquel had no idea Dawn was behind her!

I love this look, it is though she is asking “can you see me, can you see me?”

This was the pictures from the accessible photo booth! It was so much fun and had all these backgrounds! I enjoyed making funny faces!

By accident I stumbled across how to make a caption on the pictures! I love those kind of accidents!

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year on behalf of everyone with Camp Craig Allen!

Christmas memories cont.!

07 Sunday Dec 2014

Amanda Hall, Vice President & Marketing Director                                           My Daughter’s First Christmas is a special memory for me!

I have perfect Christmas memories from my childhood. Straight from a movie, my family all came together every year for fellowship and Christmas cheer. Adults cooked and baked and chatted. Kiddos shook presents and laid under the Christmas tree looking at the lights. With this in mind, I was excited for my daughter Avenly’s first Christmas.

Leading up to Christmas 2012, Avenly was a 6 month old giggly, curious, rolly-polly angel. I just knew this was the perfect time for her to discover the joy of Christmas and experience the same wonderful traditions I had. Unfortunately, when the final days came around, trying to coordinate family schedules and get everyone together fell apart. I was bummed, thinking somehow this would diminish my child’s experience.

Nonsense! Watching Avenly attempt to open presents and then get more excited about the box they came in was all I needed to be reminded about the true meaning of Christmas. Praising God for the gift of His son and the blessing of my daughter, I will forever remember Avenly’s first Christmas as the beginning of a new tradition: A time when my little family remembers the ‘reason for the season’ and loves, laughs and lives for the JOY this time of year brings.

Amanda's memory

I loved posting about this memory as much as I am sure that you enjoyed it! I love you Amanda!

More memories to come!

Christmas memories on the corner of my mind…!

04 Thursday Dec 2014

Christmas time is always a busy time! It is my favorite time of year, not only for the reason we celebrate Christmas but also for all of the warmth and care that is given and received by everyone! There are so many things that I look forward to during Christmas time: the stories of kindness that I hear, the TV programs, special productions (Nutcracker, plays, concerts), the music, looking for all of Christmas lights around, decorating my own house, getting Christmas cards from family and friends, drinking hot chocolate while sitting by the fireplace, and all of the Christmas parties with family and friends! Sorry about that I got lost in the moment, LOL! I wanted to share some favorite special Christmas memories from each of the board members Of Camp Craig Allen to give a more personal side to us. Hope you enjoy! I will be sharing these memories throughout the month:

Stephanie Kilgore, Board of Directors & Social Media Coordinator                         While I have so many memories of Christmas time I could share, but as I was going through my pictures these 2 hold special memories for me!

XMas 1985 Bear claws

This picture above was taken during Christmas 1985 when I was 11. My grandparents had given me these bear claw house shoes! I wore those shoes until they had holes on the bottom of them, I adored them! This was the last Christmas that I spent with my grandpa, so that made the shoes even more special to me. It looks like my pants were afraid of the bear claw shoes as they couldn’t be waiting in high water anymore, LOL!!

XMas 1996

This picture was taken Christmas 1996 when I was 22. It is one of my favorite Christmas pictures not only because I was surrounded by awesome friends, but the tree and Santa makes it look like one of those Christmas postcards with the way we were all posing. I was at a MDA Christmas party in Tulsa Oklahoma (that was where I grew up).

Reminder: If you have not RSVPed for the Camp Craig Allen Christmas party on Saturday, December 6 in Frisco Texas there is still time to due so by going jingle jingle www.campcraigallen.org/hello-campers! You won’t want to miss it! Tons of fun for everyone!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
Rolling on, Stephanie
